"I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out til sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in." John Muir, 1913

President's Council Makes Fitness Measurable

In July of 1956, the President’s Council on Youth Fitness was founded to encourage children to be healthy and active. In 1963, President Kennedy changed the name to President’s Council on Physical Fitness to include all Americans, not just kids. Many of us remember growing up with President’s Council fitness tests in our public schools. And some of us had our first dose of “exercise” as we know it because of those tests.

In 2010, President Obama changed the name once again to its present identity President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition placing emphasis on healthy eating as an equal quality of wellness and health.

After more than 50 years of education, the Council’s offerings have expanded greatly to include a variety of information leading to a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, adults can enjoy specific fitness testing and challenges the way we did as kids. Regardless of the programming, the promotion of several sports and fitness activities make their tests doable and fun. In December 2010, Nordic Walk Now contacted the Council with a proposal to include the compelling activity of Nordic walking. The proposal was successful and Nordic walking was placed on their list of recognized activities.

Nordic Walk Now encourages people to re-examine their fitness perspectives. If you are in a rut—working out but going nowhere, it’s time to reinvent your objectives to be broad and inclusive, the same way the Council did. They have the options you may be searching for whether it’s just you or better, your family. If you are new to fitness, just doing something is valuable, compared to just doing nothing. Measuring your fitness ability is as simple as clicking this link to get started.

The council has evolved but never changed their intention to educate and get the public moving. Rather they expanded the objectives to include all Americans regardless of age and ability. As a review and with respect to our government, here are the most important qualities of their programs:

a. Expand national interest in and awareness of the benefits of regular physical activity, fitness, sports participation, and good nutrition;
b. Stimulate and enhance coordination of programs within and among the private and public sectors that promote physical activity, fitness, sports participation, and good nutrition;
c. Expand availability of quality information and guidance regarding physical activity, fitness, sports participation, and good nutrition; and
d. Target all Americans; with particular emphasis on children and adolescents, as well as populations or communities in which specific risks or disparities in participation in, access to, or knowledge about the benefits of physical activity, fitness, sports participation, and good nutrition have been identified.

From all of us at Nordic Walk Now, get educated and get involved. Inspire yourself. Inspire others. Get fit, one step at a time! The clock is ticking…..

Welcome to Nordic Walk Now.

Nordic walking offers many physiological benefits including heart health, weight loss, promotes excellent posture, back health and more. Using Nordic walking poles for fitness or stability facilitates a full-body stimulation, an interaction with the downward pull of gravity that creates bone density and spreads the effort throughout your body. Proper skills and safe techniques bring about a user-friendly, low-impact workout experience. Use of poles is ageless and without limits, from kids to grandmas to athletes, and those with disabilities. more info
